Sundance is named for Sundance Mountain, where the Sioux held sun dances. Also, outlaw Harry Longabaugh served time in the Crook County Jail here in Sundance. Afterwards, Harry was known as the "Sundance Kid!"
Highlights:
Walk through town of Keystone, storefronts with western theme
First stop, Mount Rushmore. Hike Presidential Trail to base of mountain. Impressive!
Visit to Hill City, S. D. for fuel. Another town with western theme
Drove the Needles Highway through Custer National Park. Incredible drive! Another road to add to list of favorite drives!
Stopped at the Crazy Horse Monument, another impressive sight. Quite a complex, including museum and cultural center, with plans for more expansion.
Final visit of the day, Jewel Cave National Monument. Took tour by Ranger Dennis, remarkable formations. Third largest cave in the world, with over 130 miles mapped. Figure only three or four percent of caves have been surveyed.
Nice drive through western South Dakota to Northeastern Wyoming.
